Nonresidential construction in Southeast Michigan remained steady in 2007, according to new data from SEMCOG

Nonresidential floorspace either under construction or completed in Southeast Michigan in 2007 totaled nearly 42 million square feet, according to data released by SEMCOG, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments, on its Web site at www.semcog.org.

Nonresidential Development Activity in Southeast Michigan, 2007 summarizes projects which were completed or under construction in the seven-county Southeast Michigan region during 2007. Completed projects contributed nearly 17.5 million square feet of new floorspace. More than 24 million square feet were under construction in 2007.

Leading the region, Oakland County had 13.9 million square feet of floorspace either completed or under construction in 2007, accounting for one-third of Southeast Michigan's total nonresidential development. Wayne County followed next with 13.73 million square feet of floorspace completed or under construction (33 percent of region), and Washtenaw County, at 5.9 million square feet of new floorspace, was third (14 percent of region).

The largest development projects in the region in 2007 were the new C.S. Mott Children’s and Women’s Hospital at the University of Michigan Health System (1.1 million square feet); the new North Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport (Romulus; 820,000 square feet); and the U.S. Postal Service Processing Center (Pontiac; 806,000 square feet).
